Why are trench coats called "trench coats?" They're lightweight. They're jackets. They should be called "trench jackets."

My point is, I know it's spring now and coats won't (fingers crossed) be required again until next winter. So I want you to know that I'm not posting a whole collage of coats now, in April, when nobody got any need for those. I'm posting trench jackets, k? And jackets are an appropriate outerwear choice currently.
